NAPLES -- Collier County schools, FGCU, FSW and Keiser University all closed classes for Monday as Tropical Storm Eta moved closer to Florida on Sunday.

The Collier County Bureau of Emergency Management asks residents to be patient and take precautions as Tropical Strom Eta approaches the Southwest Florida coast.

• No evacuations are planned at this time.

• No shelters or special needs shelters are planned to be opened at this time.

• Shelter in place, stay off roads, expect periods of heavy rain this evening, and potential for tropical storm force gusts after midnight and through Monday afternoon.

• Expect intermittent power outages.

• Use battery-powered flashlights, don’t use candles.

• Charge your cell phone.

• If you run a portable generator, conditions for outside use must be dry, at least 15 feet away from your home.

• Connect appliances directly to the generator and follow all directions in the owner’s manual.

• Operating a generator in a garage or lanai can kill you from carbon monoxide fumes.

• Continue to monitor radio, television, NOAA weather radio for updates.

• Tornadoes can always be a potential threat during unstable weather conditions.

• Ensure you are registered with Alert Collier for feeds from the National Weather Service or other emergency information from Collier County. AlertCollier.com

• Secure any loose objects around your yard, outdoor patio, etc.

• Do not conduct any tree trimming operations currently due to windy conditions and the extremely high risk around windblown power lines.

• Remember to treat any downed power lines as energized and extremely dangerous. Call 911 if you see down or sparking powerlines.

• Report your residential power outages directly to FP&L at 800-468-8243 or LCEC at 800-599-2356.

• Do not call 911 for general information. 911 is only for emergency life safety response. Dialing 911 for non-emergency information delays operators from attending to life safety emergency calls.

• Call 311 for all non-emergency government service requests within Collier County or dial (239) 252-8999 outside of Collier County during regular business hours.

• Do not drive through flooded roadways that you cannot see the painted lines on the road. Don’t drown, turn-around.

• Allow for extra drive time and time to assess travel conditions Monday morning.

On Saturday, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order Saturday declaring a State of Emergency for eight counties in Florida.

"Because of the foregoing conditions, I in abundance of caution declare that a state of emergency exists in the following counties: Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monore, and Palm Beach Counites," the order states.
