Hendry County commissioners help pay for football uniforms

Posted

CLEWISTON -- Clewiston Cougar and LaBelle Longhorn  football teams will get a $7,500 donation from the Hendry County Board of Commissioners to be used for new team uniforms.

Hendry County Commissioner Karson Turner recommended the donation during the HCBOCC regular meeting Aug. 10.

The county discontinued donations for items like this in 2008-2009, but now that the economy has improved Turner wanted commissioners to consider returning to the practice, starting with new uniforms for the Clewiston Cougars and LaBelle Longhorns.

The suggestion was well received by the board, with Commissioner Emma Byrd suggesting starting out with a $5,000 contribution while Chairman Mitchell Wills thought $10,000 would be a good starting point.

“Your Clewiston Cougars and LaBelle Longhorns are your Clewiston Tigers and LaBelle Cowboys,” he said. “If we don’t start giving back to these organizations our high schools are going to falter.”

Ultimately, commissioners agreed 5-0 to approve $7,500 for the uniforms to come from the General Fund.
