Face your fears on Hendry’s Annual Haunted Hayride

LABELLE — Hendry County is filled with plenty of whispers about ghost stories and haunted buildings, from the motels in Clewiston to cemeteries in Fort Denaud. But nothing can rival the chilling fright nights of LaBelle’s annual Haunted Hayride. A fundraiser that benefits Relay for Life LaBelle, this year’s Spooktacular event will start at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29, 30, and 31, at Riverside Camp and Retreat Center. The last ride departs at 9:15 p.m. It comes just in time, as many are wondering what to do for fun while remaining safe during the pandemic.

Between the haunting screams heard from afar, faint bits of light piercing through the darkness, you will board the trailer and perch yourself upon a hay bale, wondering what horrors await. Then, as the old tractor engine chugs away, towing you slowly through the trees, your mind will begin to play tricks on you.

Protective face masks will be required during the ride, but organizers assure everyone that the trail is lined with “fear at every turn” — and the last thing you will be thinking of is your mask.

For those who aren’t able to face their fears in the forest, there will also be a kid-friendly area and concessions, as well as face painting by Sweet Cheeks. A portion of the face painting proceeds will also go to Relay for Life LaBelle’s fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Tickets are only $5 per ticket or five tickets for $20 for the ride, and as always the kiddie area is free of charge for the little ones.
