OKEECHOBEE — The special election to select a fifth member of the Okeechobee City Council will be held on May 4 at the First Baptist Church’s Recreational Outreach Center. 401 S.W. Fourth Street. Only city residents who are registered to vote may vote for city council members. Voting begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m.

Four candidates are competing for the open seat which is now being held by Councilman Wes Abney. Abney was appointed in 2018 to finish the term left vacant when former Councilman Mike O’Connor resigned. Despite his decision not to run in 2020, Abney agreed to remain in the seat until the special election. The special election is necessary due to the resignation of councilman-elect Russ Cale, who resigned his seat before taking office.

Noel Chandler, who has previously served on the city council is one of the andidates. “I will be available and responsive to your concerns, and I will serve with integrity, experience and dignity,” he said.

David McAuley is a retired businessman, who worked for the same company for over 40 years, is also a candidate. McAuley believes, “If you want to be successful, you need to develop three skills — trust in God, respect your family and work hard.”

Lisa Feltenberger, a local business owner, is also a candidate. “I plan to make fair, honest and informed decisions for all of us,” she said.

Beth Lehman, who also owns  local businesses is a candidate. “In my opinion, I believe the city is moving in the right direction. I would just like to be a member of the council and continue that movement forward,” she said.
