LaBelle is declared a Purple Heart City

At the December 10 City of LaBelle Commission meeting, the commissioners voted to make LaBelle a Purple Heart City. At the January 14 meeting, Bill Davis, Myra Johnson and Luis Colón presented the commission with a flag honoring their commitment to become a Purple Heart City.
Proclamation

WHEREAS, the City of LaBelle has always supported its military veteran population; and,

WHEREAS, the Purple Hear is the oldest military decoration still in present use and was initially created by General George Washington in 1782, as the “Badge of Military Merit;” and,

WHEREAS, the Purple Heart, was the first American service award or decoration made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to any member of the United States Armed Forces that was wounded or paid the ultimate sacrifice in combat with a declared enemy of the United States of America; and,

WHEREAS, the mission of the Military Order of the Purple heart, chartered by an act of Congress, is to foster an environment of goodwill among the combat-wounded veteran members and their families, to promote patriotism, to support legislative initiatives, and most importantly to make sure we never forget the sacrifices made by those so decorated; and,

WHEREAS, the community of the City of LaBelle has great admiration and the utmost gratitude for all the men and women who have selflessly served their country and this community in the Armed Forces; and,

WHEREAS, veterans have paid the high price of freedom by leaving their families and communities and placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all; and,

WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women from the City of LaBelle who served in the Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by our citizens; and,

WHEREAS, many men and women in uniform have given their lives while serving in the Armed Forces; and,

WHEREAS, the city of LaBelle falls within the purview of Chapter 696 of The Military Order of the Purple Heart and wishes to pledge its strong support for this noble organization and for those who put their lives at risk in service of their country and their fellow citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Commission of the City of LaBelle, Florida, hereby proclaims the City of LaBelle “A PURPLE HEART CITY” and encourages all residents to show their appreciation for the sacrifice of the Purple Heart recipients in defending our freedoms, to acknowledge their courage, and show them the honor and support they have earned.
