Local La Leche League meetings go virtual

HENDRY COUNTY — The La Leche League of Hendry County is excited to announce their online meetings will begin Nov. 10. The mission of La Leche League is “to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and the mother.”

At meetings, La Leche League Leaders and other mothers share experiences, give suggestions, and offer support and encouragement. These meetings are ideal for learning from and making friends with other mothers. These meetings provide time for mother-to-mother sharing in a friendly and accepting atmosphere. Meetings rotate through four general topics: advantages of breastfeeding, preparing for baby, childbirth and the new baby at home, avoiding and overcoming difficulties, and nutrition and weaning.

“In order to keep our meetings secure and confidential, I can be contacted on my cell phone or email for the initial meeting link and the monthly meeting link will be sent out the day of the meeting,” explained local La Leche League Leader, Maria Richter. “I am using Google meetings which can be accessed from any computer, tablet, or cell phone. It is not necessary to use Google and an app is included with the meeting link.”

La Leche League Leaders are mothers who have breastfed their own babies and have been trained and accredited by La Leche League International. They work to help mothers and mothers-to-be with all aspects of breastfeeding. Leaders are available for those who have breastfeeding questions or concerns.

In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, Richter facilitated the donation of two important, informational breastfeeding books, “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding” and “Making More Milk” from La Leche League of Hendry County to each of the Hendry County libraries. Richter hopes the books will serve as a guide to local moms, as they provides a range of comprehensive nursing information.
