LABELLE — The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded to a vehicular crash on Helms Road west of State Road 29 at approximately 3:35 a.m. on Sunday, March 14.

A pickup truck operated by a 39-year-old man, of Ft. Myers, was traveling east, the wrong way, on westbound Helms Road, west of State Road 29.

At the same time a van operated by a 19-year-old female, of Ft. Myers, was traveling west on Helms Road in the inside lane. The truck van turned left to avoid an accident and the right side of the truck collided with the right side of the van. The van overturned and came to final rest on its roof.

The 39-year-old driver of the truck fled the scene, attempted to make a U-turn near A-Road and became stuck in the east grass shoulder of State Road 29. The driver of the truck was arrested for leaving the scene, DUI and infractions for no registration, no insurance and driving the wrong way. The man was booked into the Hendry County Jail.

It was reported the driver received minor injuries substained in the crash. The driver of the van and four passengers did not receive injuries. A 37-year-old passenger of the van received minor injuries in the crash.

FHP Trooper Zimmerly investigated the crash.
