Proclamation shines spotlight on importance of rural healthcare

Posted

CLEWISTON — Access to healthcare is always important in rural areas, but in times of uncertainty, having medical care nearby is more critical than ever. In recognition of National Rural Health Day, Hendry Regional Medical Center is showing appreciation for the healthcare professionals who are working to protect their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At a time when we rely on medical professionals more than ever, we are fortunate to have a robust healthcare system in Hendry County,” said R.D. Williams, CEO at Hendry Regional Medical Center. “We are highlighting the efforts of rural providers and reminding the community that you can count on the medical services you need at Hendry Regional Medical Center.”

The Hendry County Board of County Commissioners presented Hendry Regional with a Proclamation for National Rural Health Day recognizing Nov. 19 as a celebration meant to draw attention to medical professionals and healthcare facilities in rural areas that are addressing the unique needs of their communities through innovation and compassionate care.

Over the past several years, dozens of rural hospitals have closed, leaving communities without convenient access to critical healthcare services. According to Williams, hospitals play critical roles in communities of all sizes, especially in those that are a long drive from hospitals in larger cities.

“Having access to the medical care you need when time matters can be critical to your health.” Williams said.

Williams added that COVID-19 has led many people to delay important healthcare services, even when doing so can be risky.

“It is more important than ever to take steps to protect your health,” Williams said. “Delaying medical care can put your health at serious risk.”
