If you love salad, you can help your food dollars go a little further by regrowing lettuce from the stem.
Start with a head of Romaine lettuce. Cut it for use as normal.
Place the remaining stem in a shallow dish of water.
Place it on a windowsill or under a grow lamp.
Watch your lettuce grow!
Once it is a few inches tall, you can plant it in the garden if you choose. Or you can just leave it on the windowsill for 10 to 12 days.
Harvest your bonus lettuce leaves and enjoy!
It won’t regrow a full head of lettuce, but it will provide some extra lettuce leaves to put on a sandwich or make a small salad. If you leave in the garden too long, it may get spindly and bitter.
This method also works with celery!
