HENDRY COUNTY — Shop with a Cop, or rather “Shop with the Sheriffs,” an annual event that the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) organizes, took place in Clewiston and LaBelle over this past weekend, Dec. 12 and 13. While many changes were made, in order to keep participants safe and healthy during the current pandemic, it was still a wonderfully cheerful experience for everyone involved.

“The year 2020 has brought a time of change and uncertainty felt by all. In spite of this, our goal was to still be able to host our annual Shop with the Sheriff event. Sheriff Steve Whidden put great faith in all of us, and the planning continued,” a Facebook post from the HCSO read. “Lt. Kristy Archer got creative and figured out a way to host the event while adhering to the new safety guidelines.”

They added, “While it may have looked a little different this year, she pulled it off. Lt. Kristy Archer works hard each year, alongside many others, to make this event what it is, and we would like to extend a special thank you to the following businesses and individuals who pitched in.”

The HCSO made sure to thank both Walmarts, in Labelle and Clewiston, Stanton Mobile Homes, McDonald’s, and Marroquins Party Supply, who all pitched in and helped with the events.

“We also received several toy and cash donations while working the event. It’s not uncommon for people in the store to stop and donate right then and there. We greatly appreciate it!” HCSO explained.

This annual event helps to foster positive relationships between youth and deputies, by breaking down the barriers between the community residents and law enforcement, while developing better and more trusting relationships. While the effects are not exactly measurable, judging by the sheer number and size of the smiles on everyone’s faces, the event definitely had a positive impact.
