Summer sales tax holiday helps Florida shoppers save

TALLAHASSEE — This year, Floridians can enjoy summer savings all season long thanks to the new 2023 Florida Freedom Summer Sales Tax Holiday. The tax-free holiday on summer essentials began Monday, May 29, and runs through Labor Day, September 4. The Florida Retail Federation encourages Floridians to shop local when making tax-free purchases on a large variety of outdoor and recreational supplies.

“Floridians deserve to unwind and relax this summer,” said Scott Shalley, president and CEO of the Florida Retail Federation. “Thanks to the leadership of the Florida Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis, shoppers can save big as they gear up for their favorite outdoor activities. We encourage everyone to “Find it in Florida” and support your local retailers.”

The 2023 Freedom Summer Sales Tax Holiday offers an extended tax-exempt sales period and provides Floridians with even more savings than in previous years, including boating and water activity supplies, camping and fishing gear, sporting equipment and entertainment, and more.

Tax-exempt boating and water activity supplies include:
• Life jackets and coolers with a sales price of $75 or less;
• Recreational pool tubes, floats, inflatable chairs and pool toys with a sales price of $35 or less;
• Safety flares with a sales price of $50 or less;
• Water skis, wakeboards, kneeboards and recreational inflatable water tubes or floats with a sales price of $150 or less;
• Paddleboards and surfboards with a sales price of $300 or less;
• Canoes and kayaks with a sales price of $500 or less;
• Paddles and oars with a sales price of $75 or less; and
• Snorkels, goggles and swimming masks with a sales price of $25 or less.

• Floridians may also enjoy tax-free purchases of the following camping supplies:

Tents with a sales price of $200 or less;
• Sleeping bags, portable hammocks, camping stoves and collapsible camping chairs with a sales price of $50 or less; and
• Camping lanterns and flashlights with a sales price of $30 or less

Florida shoppers interested in fishing can find savings on:
• Individual rods and reels with a sales price of $75 or less; or
• A set of rods and reels with a sales price of $150 or less;
• Tackle boxes or bags with a sales price of $30 or less; and
• Individual bait or fishing tackle with a sales price of $5 or less; or
• Multiple bait and tackle items that are sold together with a sales price of $10 or less.

Other recreational savings include tax-free purchases of other supplies such as:
• Sunscreen or insect repellant with a sales price of $15 or less;

• Sunglasses with a sales price of $100 or less;
• Binoculars with a sales price of $200 or less;
• Water bottles with a sales price of $30 or less;
• Hydration packs with a sales price of $50 or less;
• Outdoor gas or charcoal grills with a sales price of $250 or less;
• Bicycle helmets with a sales price of $50 or less;
• Bicycle with a sales price of $500 or less;
• Individual residential pool and spa replacement parts, nets, filters, lights and covers with a sales price of $200 or less;
• Residential pool and spa chemicals with a sales price of $150 or less; and
• Children’s athletic equipment with a sales price of $300 or less.

This year’s new Freedom Summer Sales Tax Holiday was established when Governor DeSantis signed HB 7063 into law on May 25.

The Florida Retail Federation encourages Floridians to shop local and “Find It In Florida” when browsing for their summer gear. Whether shoppers enjoy camping, fishing, or just relaxing at the beach, they can “Find It In Florida” and shop local retailers.
