LABELLE — “When being pulled over stop as soon as safely possible!” the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) warned the public in a Facebook post just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Just moments before posting on their official Facebook page, HCSO deputies encountered an incident where the driver of a white Ford Pickup who did not immediately take advantage of the opportunity to slow down and pull over. Deputy Michael Afonso was attempting to conduct a routine traffic stop. Afonso reported that the driver’s excessive speed, while traveling on SR80 in Labelle, was what first caught the officer’s attention.

“This individual chose to ignore lights and sirens, sped up for a short time, ran through a red light and eventually decided to come to a stop,” reported the HCSO. “Speeding up and running through a red light while a Deputy is attempting to stop you will land you in the back of a police car quick.”

HSCO went on to explain that this incident could have ended differently for this driver, had he made better choices.

“Remember we are here to serve and PROTECT. Excessive speed and running through a red light poses a danger to others in the community,” HSCO added.

“Travel safe and arrive alive.”
