Watch out for gators!

Posted

Everglades National Park shared this message about gator nesting season last week: “It’s alligator nesting season, so you know what that means -- be cautious and stay back! Female American alligators will defend their nests; please make sure to give them their space (minimum 15 feet). Although the chances are low that you will see a nest along trails, remain aware and respectful.

“These nests are built by females and include dirt, sticks and other vegetation. They choose nest sites above the water level to reduce the chance of flooding, which would kill most eggs within 12 hours of submergence. Completed nests are about 3.5 feet high and twice as wide. Females remain near the nest -- when danger threatens, she will rapidly return to the nest to protect her eggs.”
