This is the third year Immokalee and Gulfview middle schools have participated in the mock commission meeting, which began as a collaborative effort with Commissioner Penny Taylor reaching out to Superintendent Dr. Kamela Patton, in coordination with Immokalee Middle School Principal Ryan Nemeth and Gulfview Middle School Principal Kristina Lee. Manatee Middle School, Pine Ridge Middle School, and Lely High School students will also participate this year. Teachers have been preparing their civics class students to discuss topics of their choosing. Some of the selected topics include: • Building a digital park • Building a homeless shelter or battered women’s shelter • Renewable energy solutions for county buildings and vehicles • Fracking and drilling bans Students will assume the roles of commissioners, the county attorney, county manager, and deputy county manager. Other students will play the role of community members prepared to debate both sides of the presented topics. County staff will be on hand to assist the students. For more information, contact Sherry Greco, executive coordinator to Commissioner Penny Taylor, at (239) 252-8604, or Mikie Stroh, coordinator, K-12 social studies, at (239) 377-0096.
