Monthly markets planned at Pahokee marina

PAHOKEE -- Does the City of Pahokee need a new logo?

At the Oct. 26 meeting of the Pahokee City Commission, City Manager Greg Thompson said he often asks people who enter city hall if they think the current city logo represents Pahokee. “No one ever says yes,” he added.

The logo, which depicts a sandy beach, a palm tree and a sailboat, seems at odds with the City of Pahokee.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has started a logo contest, asking school children to come up with their own artwork to illustrate what the City of Pahokee means to them. Fliers about the logo contest were distributed in local schools. The top prize is $500.

Thompson said as Pahokee prepares to celebrate the city’s 100th anniversary, it’s a good time to select a logo that really represent the city.

In other business, Thompson said they hope to start a monthly market at the Pahokee marina.

“We want to fill the marina up,” said Thompson. “There’s a lot of small businesses in town that may not have a storefront. This is a chance to get your name out there.”

Those who would like to have a booth or volunteer to help with the market are asked to contact the city manager’s office.

Thompson said they don’t have a starting date yet, but plans to host the markets once a month.
