As the COVID-19 crisis continues to have explosive growth throughout the county, and specifically Collier County, Dr. Matt Hing has had a little over a week to settle in, and provide an update about what his volunteer work will entail. Hing, is working with the organization Partners in Health (PIH) through the month of July, to support and strengthen COVID-19 response efforts in Immokalee and Collier County.
Hing will be partnering with the Collier County Department of Health, to train and deploy their new cohort of health promoters.
“Ten women and men from Immokaleee will go door to door to help spread information about resources and health education for COVID-19 to their neighbors and community members. PIH is also working with community groups such as: Mision Peniel, Global Response Management, Salvation Army, and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, to bolster the social resources available to folks economically impacted by COVID-19,” he explained.
Hing is originally from Michigan, but for the last few years has been in California in medical school.
Hing also reported that he had previously worked with PIH, “In areas like rural Chiapas, Mexico and Maryland County, Liberia, on community health projects,” and added that he “is excited to contribute to similar efforts closer to home here in Florida.”
