Arrest made in arson case

Posted

OKEECHOBEE - Okeechobee County deputies responded to a residential fire at
1648 NW 45th Terrace around 6:45 p.m. on April 2, 2021. The home was fully involved when the initial deputy arrived on the scene. After Okeechobee County Fire Rescue extinguished the fire, a search found that the house was unoccupied. Witnesses identified suspect, Matthew Tate, a person known to reside in the home, leaving the area just before seeing smoke. The description of Tate also matched the initial deputy’s recollection of a male walking in the middle of the roadway several blocks away as the deputy was responding.

Tate was located at another home in the area, along with at least one witness to Tate attempting to burn the house. Tate reportedly admitted to setting the home on fire to stop the “evil” that happens there.

Matthew Tate was arrested on one Count of Arson 2nd Degree on $5,000.00 bail as of report time.
