AVON PARK -- The week of Jan. 20, Avon Park Air Force Range used Helo technology to enhance their prescribed burn acreage. They burned approximately 3,000 acres using "dragon eggs" shot from a helicopter.
Dragon eggs are small balls containing potassium permanganate that ignite after reaching the ground. The dragon eggs are injected with glycol, starting a chemical reaction that will generate flames in 20 to 40 seconds after being dropped.
The Florida ecosystem is fire-dependent. Prescribed burns benefit the natural ecosystem and reduce the risk of wildfires by preventing the build up of dead brush.
