OKEECHOBEE-The Okeechobee County School Board recognized members of the 2020-21 OHS Bass Club Team and the Okeechobee High School and Yearling Middle School FFA at their July 13 meeting.
At the board meeting from the OHS Bass Club were Latt Durrance, Trent Nelson, Hunter Daniels, Josh King along with boat captains Rafe Durrance and Capp Williams.
The duo of Durrance and Nelson were state champions this year. They also qualified for nationals along with Daniels and King.
“Competition is getting tougher by the year,” said Billy Ellerbee at the meeting. “This sport is growing and growing. Both Latt and Trent set out to win the state championship, because it was on our lake this year, Lake Okeechobee. They were down third or fourth place on day one. But day two was an absolutely phenomenal day. By the end of the tournament they had five fish with a combined weight of 27.68 pounds.”
FFA members at the board meeting to be recognized were Jenna Larson, John Williamson, II, and Brady Williamson.
Larson was recently named the District 11, FFA Secretary and took third place in the FFA State Extemporaneous Speaking competition. Both Larson and Williamson, II were state winners in the Division 6, FFA Agri Science Fair. Brady Williamson was the state winner in the Division 1, FFA Agri Science Fair.
Larson and Williamson, II worked together on a project involving a gene in cattle that would help them regulate heat better.
“It’s hot in Florida, we all know that,” said Larson describing the project to the board. “Heat stress in dairy cattle causes lower milk production and higher risk of disease. And if we were able to mitigate the effects of heat stress from a genetic standpoint it could be environmentally and economically sustainable for the farmer.”
