Big guns moved from Veterans' Park

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — You may have noticed a couple things missing from Veterans' Park this week. Have no fear, the guns were not taken for nefarious reasons but have been transported to a secure location to be cleaned and refurbished.

The guns were moved on Tuesday. David and Pam Williams from BMJ, donated their equipment, and Don Hugh, Matt Stevens and Randy and Cody Yates volunteered their time to drive. Travis McCoy and Steve Symington from the Florida Forest Service did all the necessary cutting and prep work for lifting.

Lt. Belen Reyna and Public Works Director David Allen directed traffic.

The work is expected to take approximately a month.

Cpl. Jack Nash of the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office said, "Much like the tank, we need funds to support this. You can donate at the American Legion, Amvet, VFW Posts, or the Okeechobee Sheriff's Office and earmark it for 'the guns.' They will receive new bases, stripped, rust removed and fixed, then repainted in a WW2 scheme prior to be replaced."
