Okeechobee High School sophomore Isaac Schlosser and senior Peyton Johnson are this week’s Big Lake Athletes of the Week for their performance with the Brahman tennis team.
Isaac and Peyton went undefeated in doubles this season for Okeechobee, and advanced all the way to the state tournament. At the state tournament, the duo battled Osceola Fundamental High School’s Jovan Golijanin and Alessandro De Bernardo in the quarterfinals, falling 8-5.
Overall, the Brahmans finished with a 12-4 record this year. Head coach Tony Madrigal was proud of the team’s effort this season.
“We had an amazing season,” said Madrigal. “You couldn’t ask for a closer group of young men. They won together and they lost together. And even though we didn’t reach our goals of winning districts and finding our way to state as a team, it still doesn’t blemish our great season and the effort put forth by these young men.”
The Brahmans were back-to-back district runners-up in the last two years under Madrigal. His son, senior Anthony Madrigal, was captain of the team this season.
The Brahmans swept Centennial this season, beating them 7-0 in both match-ups. In addition to the two matches against Centennial, Okeechobee also had 7-0 shutouts over Treasure Coast and John Carroll. After losing to a tough South Fork team 2-5 in their first match early in the season, Okeechobee came back to defeat the Bulldogs 4-3 on March 7. Isaac and Peyton both contributed to the win, with Isaac defeating senior Richie Paluszek 8-6 and Peyton defeating senior William DeGaetano 8-4.
