Brahman baseball holds off South Fork rally for close win

Posted

STUART– The Okeechobee High School varsity baseball team held off a seventh inning rally by South Fork on Feb. 26 to take a 3-2 victory.

Jacob Hardy pitched all seven innings for the Brahmans, striking out seven and allowing only two hits. Jayce Markham had two hits for Okeechobee.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Gavin Kindell drove in Bryce Ward to put the Brahmans up 1-0. In the sixth inning Okeechobee would add two more runs when Ethan Blomefield drew a bases loaded walk and Kase Myers scored on a pitch dropped by the South Fork catcher.

The win brings the Okeechobee’s record to 1-2. The Brahmans nearly beat Jensen Beach in the game prior to South Fork. OHS fell behind 6-0 in the early innings of that game, but came roaring back with a six-run performance in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Ultimately both teams would head to extra innings where Jensen retook the lead, and won the game, in the bottom of the tenth.

The baseball season was disrupted last year by COVID-19. The Brahmans were off to a 4-4 start with big, blowout wins over Centennial and South Fork when the call came down that the season was over.It was a crushing blow to a team that had hopes for a district championship.

“I think we could have won the district championship, without a doubt,” said 2020 senior baseball player Ozzy Osceola. “I think we could have made it to the final four to represent Okeechobee High School at state.”

“Our season being cut short it is one of the biggest disappointments,” continued Osceola. “Having my senior season cut short, not being able to walk across the field on senior night and not being able to have a shot at winning the district championship that we have been wanting since our freshman year is the worst feeling ever.”

The Brahmans are back on the field in Okeechobee on March 5 when they host Port St. Lucie at 6 p.m.
