OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee High School Brahman varsity baseball team is preparing to host the Centennial Eagles on March 24.

The Brahmans are 4-4 after splitting a pair of games with Sebastian River and Lake Placid last week. Okeechobee lost to Sebastian River 7-3, and defeated Lake Placid 4-2.

On March 16 against Sebastian River, the Brahmans took the early lead after Jayce Markham and Braison Crews drove in two runs in the top of the third. They held that lead until the bottom of the fifth when Sebastian battled their way back to the top with a 3-2 score.

Although the Brahmans tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth, a series of uncharacteristic errors on defense by Okeechobee in the bottom of the sixth put Sebastian back up 7-3.

Two days later on March 18 the Brahmans got their chance to bounce back from the Sebastian River loss when they traveled to take on the Lake Placid Dragons.

Jacob Hardy led the Brahmans on the pitcher’s mound against the Dragons, allowing zero runs and zero hits in five runs pitched. Hardy struck out eight Lake Placid batters. In the top of the fifth Hardy drove in the first run of the game on a grounder.

Okeechobee increased that 1-0 lead to 4-0 thanks to a big seventh inning. Bryce Ward had an RBI, while Raif Holmes and Bryce Ward scored on a wild pitch. Lake Placid threatened a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, but only managed to score two runs.

Now the Brahmans are hosting the 8-2 Centennial Eagles on March 24 at OHS. The Eagles should be a test for the Okeechobee defense, which has been a strength all season. Centennial has won four of their 10 games by double digits this year, beating Master’s Academy 19-0 and 18-0, St. Edwards 17-0, and Glenelg Country 20-0. Senior Christopher Torres leads the Eagles in hits and RBI’s so far this season with 17 each.

The Eagles and Brahmans take the field at 6 p.m. on March 24.
