OKEECHOBEE– The 8-2 Okeechobee High School varsity boys basketball team is set to close their regular season this week when they host the Treasure Coast Titans on Feb. 5.

The Brahmans are on a five game winning streak and have locked up the first seed in their 5A district 13. Along that winning streak Okeechobee defeated Port St. Lucie, Sebastian River, Westwood, Moore Haven, and John Carroll Catholic.

Okeechobee was originally scheduled to play the Martin County Tigers in the midst of those five games but the school canceled all remaining regular season games for their boys and girls basketball teams. In a statement on Twitter the school said this was done out of an abundance of caution and an attempt to give their student-athletes and coaches an opportunity to compete in the upcoming FHSAA playoffs.

Martin County had managed to stay undefeated up until the announcement, with a record of 17-0. You have to imagine the Brahmans were looking forward to proving they were not to be a team to be overlooked by ruining the Tigers’ perfect season.

Still, even without the opportunity to prove themselves against Martin County, the Brahmans have looked good in the second half of their season.

Senior Kehjayah Rogers leads the Brahmans in scoring this year, with 160 points. Kehjayah also leads the team in offensive rebounds with 27 and is second in steals for Okeechobee with 24. Senior Rowan Hanley Jr. has been a force around the rim this year and leads the Brahmans in total rebounds with 48.

With the first seed Okeechobee would have a first round bye in the district playoffs and currently would face the winner of a match between Boynton Beach and Jensen Beach.

Treasure Coast comes to Okeechobee with a 5-9 record. The Titans have had an up and down season with their most recent game being a close 1-point loss to Centennial 68-67. Okeechobee can head into the playoffs on a six-game winning streak with a victory on Friday, as well as a lot of momentum.

The Brahmans host the Titans on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
