TALLAHASSEE — The State Legislative Budget Commission has approved a $1 million Local Support Grant, sponsored by State Rep. Dana Trabulsy (R-Fort Pierce), for the design and planning for a new Medical Examiner Facility on the Treasure Coast. The four counties, St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River, and Okeechobee, combined their efforts in providing a match on this endeavor. Also, included in this partnership, Dr. Tim Moore and the Indian River State College Board of Trustees, have agreed to provide a long-term lease of two acres of Trustee land for the new facility.

Currently, the Medical Examiner operates out of a leased space originally built in 1975 located on the main campus of Indian River State College in Fort Pierce. Unfortunately, this structure is in poor condition and beyond rehabilitation.

“The Okeechobee Board of County Commissioners are pleased to work with our adjoining counties in providing the necessary funding supporting Rep. Trabulsy’s effort on this endeavor. Our commission is committed to providing a safe and secure facility for the Medical Examiner,” stated Commissioner Terry Burroughs, Chairman of the Okeechobee Board of County Commissioners.

This project will accommodate the district’s growing population, and better assist the State Attorney’s Office in their criminal prosecutions and ensure timely determinations in accordance with Florida Statute Chapter 406. The new facility will also provide dignity to the deceased and their families.
