OKEECHOBEE — How difficult is it to plan the perfect murder? On paper, it might seem easy, but in real life, there’s always at least one forgotten detail that could point the authorities to the truth.

“Dial M for Murder,” a crime thriller staged by the Okeechobee Community Theatre, revolves around a murder plot that doesn’t exactly go as planned. And, as always, the smallest details can make all the difference in finding the truth. The play is based on the novel by Frederick Knott and was the inspiration for the Hitchcock film of the same name.

The play revolves around Margot Wendice (played by Katherine Hardy), a wealthy woman who is married to a former tennis pro.

As the play opens, TV writer Max Halliday (Cesar Marin) details the many murders he has planned – for TV scripts of course. Max explains while he can come up with dozens of ways to kill people for a script, in real life, there are too many variables. Max is visiting Margot, and the two have a secret.

Margot’s husband, Tony Wendice, (Christian Garner) has a few secrets of his own, as does Captain Lesgate (played by Josh VanWormer.)

It’s up to Inspector Hubbard (James Garner) to sort out the secrets, details and lies. Garner also directs the play.

Joe Marcinek is assistant director. Robyn Garner and Grace Morgan are stage managers. Ryan Martin is in charge of sound. Laura Murray and Tina Welborn are in charge of lights. Ashlea Garner is stage crew. Steve Burke and Tim Welborn designed the set. Jane Kaufman Robarbs handled photography and marketing.

The 2022-2023 Okeechobee Community Theatre season is dedicated to the memory of Ron Hayes, and the troupe did their former leader proud with the first play of the season.

Hayes, who died Oct. 17, joined Okeechobee Community Theatre in its inaugural season and became the director shortly thereafter. For 40 years, he dedicated his time and talents to creating and promoting the theatre. “Ron was a kind and encouraging director, artist, and friend and he will be dearly missed,” the “Dial M for Murder” program states. “It is without a doubt that Mr. Hayes was instrumental in the longevity of this program and its success. In the past 40 years, countless hours have been spent in this auditorium – lines have been learned, sets have been built, audiences have been captivated and a family has been created – none of which would have been possible without Ron’s initial enthusiasm and lasting devotion.”

The play opened Oct. 28. Performances continue through Nov. 12. Tickets for evening and matinée performances can be purchased online at okeechobeecommunitytheatre.com, at the office of Okeechobee Main Street, or at the door, one hour prior to each performance.
