OKEECHOBEE- The condition of Lofton Road was brought up by a resident at the Dec. 8 Okeechobee County Commission meeting.
Joyce Bussell brought her concerns to commissioners in the public comment portion of the meeting, beginning by complimenting all the improvements Okeechobee County has had in the recent year before going to highlight her disappointment with the amount of potholes on NW 144th Ave.
“Okeechobee is doing a wonderful job,” began Bussell before thanking the commissioners for their work. “But, what I would like to know is how many of you have been on Lofton Road? The condition of Lofton Road is deplorable. If any of you lived on Lofton Road you’d either move or get something done about it. We have had promises for the last three years. We’ve been waiting.”
Bussell said she had lost count of the amount of times the potholes had been repaired at this point.
“As you know, tires are expensive,” said Bussell. “As are alignments on cars. It’s unsafe and it’s disappointing with a capital d.”
Board Chairman David Hazellief said he had some good news for Bussell after she finished speaking.
“Lofton Road is on the work list,” said Commissioner Hazellief . “A $7 million project. It is being designed now as we speak for complete rework.”
When Bussell asked for a timeline on when the project would begin, Commissioner Hazellief gave an estimate of within the year.
“It has to go through the design process, it has to go out for approval from the state, and then it has to go out for bid,” said Hazellief. “But my guestimation of a timeline would be no less than a year.”
