Corps hopes to reopen Lake Okeechobee Waterway this week

LAKE OKEECHOBEE – The Corps’ South Florida Operations Office has made significant progress, due to the hard work of their crews, working 12 hour days, seven days a week, since the tussocks blocked navigation near the Moore Haven Lock and Dam.

Work continues Tuesday.

“We hope to reopen the Moore Haven Lock and Dam to navigation sometime this week,” explained Erica Skolte with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Monday.

USACE South Florida Operations Office heavy equipment operators worked 12 hour shifts again through the weekend, removing large quantities of vegetation around Moore Haven Lock and Dam, and specifically targeting the blocked channel at S-280 (the new name for the old C1 culvert just south of the Moore Haven Lock and Dam), she explained.

The South Florida Water Management District mechanical harvester was relocated from northwest Lake Okeechobee, to the affected area Monday afternoon to assist with final cleanup effort at S-280.

Additional vegetation will be removed from areas surrounding Moore Haven Lock and Dam this week.

No more significant quantities of vegetation have moved into the Okeechobee Waterway. The buoy line in the Rim Canal at S-281 (the former C5A, the culvert just north of the Moore Haven Lock and Dam) will remain in place to prevent significantly more vegetation from entering the navigation channel.
