Emergency care providers are attacked while providing care

OKEECHOBEE — While medical staff at Raulerson Hospital attempted to treat a patient on Monday, Sept. 14, he reportedly kicked one of them in the face and bit another on the arm. Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Kenneth Hernandez responded to the call at approximately 3:15 p.m. The patient was transferred to JFK for mental evaluation but was released the following day.

Dayne M. Smith, 52, Southeast 30th Terrace, was arrested Sept. 23 and charged with two counts battery on an emergency care provider. His bond was set at $5,000.

Smith reportedly told Deputy Hernandez he was intoxicated the day of the incident and does not remember what occurred.
