Volunteers sought for Head Start Community Read Weeks in October

Posted

The Economic Opportunities Council of Indian River County (EOC) will be hosting Head Start Community Read Weeks from Oct. 4 to 15, 2021. EOC is inviting members of the community to come to a Head Start classroom in either Indian River or Okeechobee County to read to the children.

“With just a half hour of your time, you can truly brighten these children’s day and help them develop a love for reading”, says EOC Executive Director, Angela Davis-Green.

For the health and safety of the volunteers, children, families, and teachers, EOC is asking that volunteers be vaccinated and wear a mask during their time in the classroom.

Anyone interested in volunteering to read should contact Nancy McCurry to schedule a date, time, and location. Call Nancy at 772-562-4177 Ext. 1114 or email her at nmccurry@eocofirc.net.

Head Start is a full-day and full-year early childhood development program for at-risk, low-income children three to five years old. Head Start prepares children for school readiness. The program provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition, dental, and family engagement services to improve the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of children.

EOC is a Community Action Agency serving Indian River and Okeechobee Counties. EOC works to transition at-risk individuals and families from poverty to self-sufficiency through its agency programs and public/private partnerships. EOC has a successful track record of providing high-quality programs and services to economically disadvantaged children and families.
