Evening of Remembrance will look a little different this year

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — After 33 years, the annual Evening of Remembrance held at Buxton & Bass Funeral home will not go on as usual this year. However, Matt Buxton said he felt he could not let the regular attendees down and would be making ornaments again this year as he always does. He will let everyone know when they are available to be picked up, and a tree will be placed on the front porch of the funeral home so the ornaments can be hung on the tree after the loved one’s name is written on the ornament.

In addition, the funeral home will be holding a “Lanterns on the Lawn” event with Hospice of Okeechobee. This will be a drive-by type event and will be held in early December.

The Night of Remembrance was begun 33 years ago after the death of Paul Buxton’s mother. He felt it would be a good way to help people through the holiday season after the loss of a loved one. Each year, they have a sky lantern send off and Matt Buxton makes ornaments which he gives free of charge to the family members. They put the name of a family member they lost on the ornament and hang it on the tree. Afterward, everyone enjoys fellowship and refreshments.

Although he hated to cancel the event this year, Matt said he could not in good conscience take a chance on having a big gathering during a pandemic. “God bless you all and stay safe,” he said.
