Ex-boyfriend is accused of breaking into storage unit

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — A local man was charged with unarmed burglary, criminal mischief and grand theft after reportedly going into his ex-girlfriend’s storage unit without permission. Robert Hair, 33, State Road 710 Southeast, was arrested Feb. 9 by Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Greis after the victim called to report a theft.

According to Greis’ report, he responded to Awesome Self Storage and met with the complainant at about 9:30 a.m. She told him Hair called her the night before and told her he had gone to her storage unit and destroyed it and took her belongings. When she arrived at the unit to investigate his claim, she found her dresser had words — cheater, fake, liar, sick, etc. — written on it with nail polish and several items were missing from the unit.

The complainant was asked to call Hair and request he bring back her belongings, and she agreed. A controlled call was made and Hair reportedly agreed to return the items.

The storage unit manager was able to access video footage of a gold color Mercury entering the property the evening before. The report notes Hair is known to drive a gold/tan Mercury belonging to his mother.

Hair was located and stopped in the 8400 block of U.S. 441 Southeast. He was taken into custody and transported to the county jail, where bond was set at $5,500.
