Fire Safety Week highlights dangers of kitchen fires

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — “Serve up fire safety in the kitchen” is the theme for the 2020 Fire Safety Week Oct. 4-10. Unattended cooking is the No. 1 cause of home fires, said Commission Chairman Terry Burroughs at the Sept. 24 meeting of the Okeechobee County Commission. This theme will be used to educate the public on cooking hazards, the dangers of unattended cooking and precautions the public can take to prevent cooking-related fires.

The everyday danger of fire still exists, said Capt. Ryan Hathaway of Okeechobee County Fire/Rescue.

At that meeting, commissioners approved a proclamation honoring fire safety, noting:

• Fire Safety Week is observed each year during the week of Oct. 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began Oct. 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
Today’s home fires burn faster than ever, and having a home fire escape plan is critical, the proclamation added. An escape plan provides the skill set and knowhow to quickly and safely escape a home fire situation. A home fire escape plan includes two exits from every room in the home, a path to the outside from each exit, smoke alarms in all required locations, and a meeting place outside where everyone in the home will meet upon exiting.
