OKEECHOBEE — “Serve up fire safety in the kitchen” is the theme for the 2020 Fire Safety Week Oct. 4-10. Unattended cooking is the No. 1 cause of home fires, said Commission Chairman Terry Burroughs at the Sept. 24 meeting of the Okeechobee County Commission. This theme will be used to educate the public on cooking hazards, the dangers of unattended cooking and precautions the public can take to prevent cooking-related fires.
The everyday danger of fire still exists, said Capt. Ryan Hathaway of Okeechobee County Fire/Rescue.
At that meeting, commissioners approved a proclamation honoring fire safety, noting:
