Glades County has walk-in covid vaccinations on Sundays

MOORE HAVEN – Glades County has no shortage of COVID-19 vaccine, according to Brian Prowant of the Glades County Health Department.

The Glades County vaccination pod has first doses of the Moderna vaccine by appointment and for walk-ins from 9 a.m. to noon on Sundays at the Glades County Regional Training Center, 1030 Industrial Drive (just off State Road 78). Second doses are given on Mondays, by appointment at the same location.

Prowant said first dose vaccination appointment can be made online at myvaccine.fl.gov. However, appointments are not necessary for first dose at the Glades County site. Appointments for the second doses are made at the time the first dose is administered, and a week before the appointment, the health department gives them a reminder call.

If there are no shows for second doses on a Monday, some doses may be available for those who need the first dose. The goal is to not waste any vaccine and get as many people vaccinated as possible.

He said residents of neighboring counties who are looking for a Sunday vaccination pod are welcome. Any Florida resident over age 18 is eligible for vaccination.

The team handling the vaccinations is the same regional team of health professionals who do the vaccinations in Okeechobee County, with first dose shots on Tuesdays and second doses on Thursdays; and Hardee County, with vaccination pods on Wednesdays and Fridays.

MOORE HAVEN -- Check in tables are set up in the entrance of the Glades County Regional Training Center. The whole vaccination pod is indoors. The building has plenty of room to maintain the recommended social distancing.

Glades County Emergency Management Director Marisa Shivers entourages everyone who would like to be vaccinated to come to the training center on Sunday. “We had 500 first doses come in today. We only had 56 appointments scheduled,” she explained. She’s not worried about running out of vaccine. “If 1,000 people showed up we could take care of them.”

She said the state reports have been underreporting how many Glades County residents have been vaccinated due to confusion about the zip codes. Some Glades County residences – such as Buckhead Ridge and Brighton Reservation – have Okeechobee zip codes. Glades County residences in North LaBelle and Muse have LaBelle zip codes.

Shivers said the training center was chosen as a vaccination site because there is plenty of indoor space to provide the needed room for social distancing. Having an indoor site also means they don’t have to worry about the weather. When the vaccination program began and they gave shots at the health department, they had a problem with not enough parking, and concerns the traffic could block the Fire/EMS vehicles.

Aimee Allen, LPN, part of the regional vaccination team, said the vaccination pod is set up with a check in area, a waiting area, six vaccination cubicles (with space to set up three more, if needed), an area to make second-dose appointments and an area for those who have been vaccinated to wait for 15 minutes (or 30 minutes in some cases) to make sure they do not have any adverse reactions. The site also has a room with refrigerators to store the vaccine. This is where the syringes are prepped. There is also a data entry area. The last station has an exit door to the parking lot. Vaccination team members are stationed throughout the site to give directions and keep everything going smoothly.
