Glades County to benefit from state funding and CARES Act funding

Posted

MOORE HAVEN -- CARES Act funding will help Glades County pay for new  county vehicles and fire department equipment.

The CARES Act fund will reimburse Glades county BOCC for the purchase of five 2022 vehicles.

Commissioners unanimously approved the purchase during its regular July 26, 2021 meeting.

Two Ford Explorer two-wheel drive vehicles totaling $55,126 for the Board of County Commissioners, two four-wheel drive Ford Explorers for the Building and Zoning Department for $57,010 and one Ford F-150 regular cab two-wheel drive truck for Building and Zoning at $21,688.

By purchasing the vehicles now, the County will pay the 2021 list price even though the vehicles will be 2022 models, said County Manager Bob Jones. Payment isn’t due until delivery which will take three to five months and the County will be reimbursed for the total cost.

“The quote sheets say the year model is 2021,” Jones said. “The dealer explained that the manufacturer is allowing dealer order now due to the computer chip shortage.”

In addition, CARES Act funding will be used to reimburse two Life-Pack 15 Heart Monitors and accessories for use on the Glades Fire Department ALS fire engines at a cost of $69,133.

Although not covered for reimbursement from the CARES Act, commissioners unanimously voted to accept a draft agreement for a state-funded grant for the Glades County E9-1-1 Public Safety Complex provided by the Florida Department of Management Services.

The back-up Enhanced 911 public safety system/service is planned for the west side of the county along a county-owned 5-acre parcel adjacent to West Glades Elementary School and will include fire, emergency medical services and a sheriff satellite office.

Two fire truck bays, one EMS bay, kitchen and bath facilities, living quarters for emergency personnel and more are included in a proposed 4,500 square-foot building.

“The two big things with this grant is it’s a reimbursable grant,” Jones said. “We have to pay for everything up front.”

The next significant factor is the county must complete the project no later than June 2022. Expenses after the cut-off will not be covered by the grant.

Jones told the commission it could be done within the next 10 or 11 months based on how a similar center on the east side of the county had been completed within the same time period.
