West Glades fifth grade students to study virtually from Aug. 23-Sept. 9

MOORE HAVEN -- Glades County School District announced Aug. 19 a decision to move all West Glades School fifth grade students to virtual learning starting Monday, Aug. 23 due to the number of students infected with COVID-19 or quarantined students.

In-class education will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Principal Doreen Sabella said parents may come to the school to pick up any equipment or materials needed for their children to work from home.

“That’s what today is for. Whoever doesn’t have that can come by and pick that up,” she said on Friday. “We’ll be walking outside to hand them to parents.”

Sabella said some of the fifth graders had been in quarantine before the first day of school and some were due to return Monday.

West Glades will continue to practice covid safety protocols and Sabella has asked to return to last year’s covid protocols.

“We had the best numbers last year and it wasn’t hurting us to do what we were doing to keep things that way.”

Sabella said the decision came from school district officials Aug. 19 after the regular school board meeting.

According to GCSD website, one student and one non-instructional staff member has been confirmed positive for covid as of Aug. 19.

Moore Haven Elementary is reported to have four instructional staff cases, four non-instructional staff and nine students and Moore Haven Middle-High School one instructional staff, three non-instructional staff and 11 students.

The district updates the data every weekday at 7 p.m.

School district officials posted formal announcements of the closing on various social media platforms as follows:

“The 5th grade at West Glades School is experiencing a large number of COVID cases and quarantined students at this time. We are moving ALL fifth grade classes at West Glades School to virtual learning starting Monday, Aug. 23 and will return to in-class learning on Tuesday, Sept. 7. We apologize for any inconvenience that this might create for your families. It is very important for us to keep students as safe as possible. Prevention strategies are in place to prevent the spread of COVID and have been since school started. Rooms are being cleaned and disinfected daily, handwashing is strongly encouraged, students are six feet apart most of the day, and cohorting is used to limit the number of students, teachers, and staff who come in contact with each other. We are doing our best to stay in school but COVID-19 continues to circulate and is highly contagious. Community transmission in Glades County has moved from substantial to high in the past few weeks.

Please continue to keep your families and your community safe. Remember to stay home if you are sick. Do not send your students to school if they are sick or someone in your house is experiencing COVID –like symptoms. If someone in your household is waiting for COVID-19 test results, please keep your student home.”

Superintendent Dr. Beth Barfield was out of the office Aug. 20 and could not be reached for comment.
