Historical Society plans historical marker at Primitive Baptist Church

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — The city of Okeechobee has partnered with the Okeechobee Historical Society in an effort to preserve and restore the Primitive Baptist Church on Southwest Third Avenue.

The goal is to turn the church into a historical museum. Mayor Watford, in a letter addressed to the State of Florida, wrote, “The church has been a part of the city’s heritage since the early 1900s. and it’s been the mission of the Okeechobee City Council to preserve as much of the heritage of the community wherever possible.”

During the April 4 city council meeting, the council approved a motion to approve a letter approving the placement of a historical marker at the church. They also approved a letter allowing the Historical Society to apply for a grant for the placement of this marker.

President of the Okeechobee Historical Society Magi Cable spoke to the council Tuesday night and explained the Historical Society has placed similar markers in other locations around Okeechobee. The marker is estimated to cost about $2,400, and the grant she plans to apply for will cover about half of that cost.

The city of Okeechobee has invested approximately $100,000 in the purchase and restoration of the church thus far.

The council encouraged the Historical Society to apply for various grants to aid in the restoration and development of historical locations.

Cable said they are looking for donations for the new museum, specifically items pertaining to the agriculture industry. Financial donations are appreciated as well.
