"I'm here with you"

Posted

OKEECHOBEE -- As this week comes to a close, so does Communications Week. We would like to thank all of our communication specialists in dispatch, who are undoubtedly our heroes.

There are too many stories to tell them all, but one that sticks with me.
As a small child, my mother and I arrived home one night to find that someone had broken in and we could hear them actively searching through our house. We snuck into a room off of the main floor, and my mother called 911 while we hid in the cellar. My mother was frantic but putting on her best face for me, telling the dispatcher I heard them in the next room.

The dispatcher said in a calm, soothing voice, "I'm here with you; my guys are 1 minute out from you,"and "you will be safe; I'm here with you."

A few seconds later (which seemed like a lifetime), in that soothing caring voice, "I'm still here with you, my guys are 30 seconds out from you," "you will be safe, I'm here with you."

The words went back and forth but that's all I heard, "I'm here with you."

When the police department showed up and found us, they also found out who the suspect was. We hung up as the police rushed into the house, never being able to say the words "Thank you" to that soothing calm voice of reason on the other end.

So as this week grows to a close, the 8-year-old scared little boy says, thank you to all our communications specialists for being the heroes you are and always "being there." God bless each one of you.
