Juneteenth event planned in Okeechobee

OKEECHOBEE — An all-day Juneteenth party is planned June 17 at the Douglas Brown Community Center.

At their June 8 meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners, approved a request from Joseph Smith to permit the use of an amplified sound system and sale of alcoholic beverages at the party, which will start at 10 a.m. and end at 11 p.m.

Smith said any profits will be donated back to the Douglas Park Community such as the clean up crew projects and the Back to School Bash.

Commissioner Brad Goodbread questioned the orientation of the speakers. In previous years, there have been noise complaints, he said.

“If there are noise complaints, we would like to see them addressed promptly,” said Goodbread. “Either turn it down, or turn down the base, so we don’t have any issues or any complaints from the residents.”

He also asked they make sure it is completely shut down at 11 p.m. “It’s a neighborhood and people want to go to sleep,” he said. “We want it to be a good, well-attended event for the community but not interfere with some of the people who have to get up and go to work the next day.”

Commissioner Kelly Owens said she was concerned the group putting on the party is not a registered non-profit organization.

“We are providing you with a benefit that is normally only available to the non-profits,” she explained. She asked Smith to bring back a financial report showing how the proceeds are re-invested in the Douglas Brown community.
