KEC Canal Point Elementary students enjoy Winter Wonderland

CANAL POINT --  The Kathryn E.  Cunningham Canal Point Elementary School enjoyed a Winter Wonderland Pageant on Dec. 8.

According to Assistant Principal Altoria Henley, the event was actually the culmination of studies the children have been working on this year.

"We have been doing 12 days of Christmas cheer to kind of get everybody into the spirit," she explained, "so that was our theme."

The school incorporated things the children learned in social studies classes such as  voting and public speaking. The children campaigned, gave speeches and voted electronically for their favorite candidates in their own grade level. The students learned about the art of persuasion and had to write a speech designed to convince everyone to vote for them.

Because the theme was holiday cheer, the children made holiday posters and made gift bags with a holiday theme to give to potential voters. "It was a very good campaign strategy."

"We used those skills they learned to help execute the Winter Wonderland pageant."

The school recently established its student government, and the student government put out flyers letting all the children know that anyone who had good behavior and had good grades was eligible to run.

The children voted for their favorites in their own grade level and then voted for their choice for Miss and Mr. KEC Canal Point.

"It all turned out so nice, and the kids really enjoyed the evening," she said.

"Congratulations to all the Winter Wonderland Pageant contestants, parents and teachers of the contestants! A special thanks to KEC Student Council, Ms. Tameka Warren, Mrs. Lydia Warren, Mrs. Boldin-Dent, Mr. Herbert Crawford, Ms. Regina Butler, Mr. Walker, the awesome custodial staff and all the people behind the scenes that made today a success!" said Henley.
