Lady Brahman volleyball 7-1 midway through season

Posted

OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman volleyball team is off to a dominating start to their season. The Lady Brahmans are 7-1 and looking to put together another win streak as they head into the back half of their season.

Okeechobee opened their season with seven back-to-back wins, including big victories over good programs such s Sebring and Centennial.

Big Lake Athlete of the Week winner senior Joy Whipple is leading the team in scoring with 82 kills and is currently second overall in points scored in the district. Fellow senior Anja Koivunen isn’t far behind with 50 kills of her own. Okeechobee is currently in first place in their district.

Okeechobee had another dramatic fifth set win on Sept. 14, this time against Lincoln Park Academy. The Lady Brahmans lost the first set to LPA, before going on to win the second and third. LPA came back to win the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth and final set.

The Lady Brahmans were leading 14-12, looking to close out the game. Then OHS junior Hailey Quesinberry saved a LPA serve, using a forearm pass to get the ball to senior Morgan Tucker. Tucker then set the ball up for Whipple who hit a dominating spike to win the game.

The next game also went to five sets, but this time, for the first time this season, things didn’t go Okeechobee’s way. The Lady Brahmans beat Sebring earlier this year in five sets 3-2. Sebring returned the favor on Sept. 16, beating Okeechobee 3-2 with a 15-12 win in the fifth set.

Next Okeechobee will be on the road to take on the 3-8 Treasure Coast Lady Titans on Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. They won’t play again in Okeechobee until Sept. 28 when they host Lincoln Park Academy.
