Lady Brahmans basketball perfect through nine games

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varsity basketball team is undefeated through their first nine games this season. The Lady Brahmans’ latest victory came over Sebastian River on Dec. 14, 55-22.

OHS won that game like they have many of their other games this year, with a dominating performance in the first quarter. Okeechobee outscored Sebastian River 25-8 in the first quarter.

In fact, one of the only times the Lady Brahmans didn’t jump out to an early lead was in the season opener against Sebring. That would be the team’s closest game of the season so far, with the Lady Brahmans battling Sebring all the way to overtime where they’d go on to take a 41-39 win.

OHS junior Adryauna Baker is currently leading the Lady Brahmans in scoring through nine games with 90 points, followed by junior Jasmine Shanks with 80. Junior Morgan Tucker has been a reliable three-point shooter for Okeechobee this year, currently leading the team with nine so far.

Baker and Jasmine Shanks also lead the team in rebounds and steals this year.

Okeechobee’s most lopsided win, by far, is their 48-6 drubbing of Port St Lucie on Dec. 7. Their 61-16 win over Fort Pierce Central is a close second.

The Okeechobee defense had 20 steals against Port St. Lucie, and never allowed more than two points in a quarter.

Although they’ve been dominant so far this season, a tough slew of opponents await the Lady Brahmans in the coming weeks. Okeechobee will be facing talented programs from Martin County and Jensen Beach in the second half of their season. Martin County is off to a 5-2 start while Jensen is an impressive 7-1.

Jensen Beach is the same team that knocked the Lady Brahmans out of the district championship and out of the regional quarterfinals last year, so there is plenty of history between the two programs.

Up next, the Lady Brahmans host the undefeated Lincoln Park Academy Lady Greyhounds. The Lady Greyhounds are coming off their own blowout win over the hapless Port St. Lucie squad, 74-7, and should be one of the bigger tests Okeechobee has faced so far this season.

Okeechobee and Lincoln Park Academy tip off at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 17 at OHS.
