Lady Brahmans beat Sebring in overtime

The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varsity basketball team opened its 2020 season with an overtime win on Nov. 19, beating the Sebring Lady Blue Streaks 41-39.

OHS junior Jasmine Shanks led the Lady Brahmans in scoring with 13 points. Jasmine also led the team in steals with five.

Sebring opened the game strong, jumping out to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter thanks to some early turnovers by Okeechobee as well as the Lady Blue Steaks taking advantage of their foul shot opportunities. The Lady Brahmans struggled at the free throw line for much of the game.

Okeechobee trailed for the entire game until there was less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. Down 35-33, Jasmine Shanks tied the game with a layup with 48 seconds left. Sebring regained the lead with two foul shots and then, with less than ten seconds remaining, OHS junior Adryauna Baker tied the game at 37-37 to force overtime.

Okeechobee took their first lead of the game in the opening minutes of overtime, and held off the Lady Blue Streaks to secure the win. In the final seconds of overtime Sebring had the ball and a chance to either tie or win the game, but OHS sophomore Leta Adamo stole the ball and ran out the clock.

The Lady Brahmans are now 1-0 and will next travel to take on South Fork on Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. Their next home game will be on Dec. 3 when they host Vero Beach in Okeechobee.
