Lady Brahmans lock up first seed

Posted

OKEECHOBEE– With their 10-3 regular season performance the Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varsity basketball team has secured the top seed in their 5A district 13 and a first round bye in the playoffs.

The Lady Brahmans earned that number one seed on the back of a dominant start to their season. Okeechobee rattled off nine back-to-back wins to open their 2020-21 campaign. They came back to beat Sebring 41-39 in a dramatic overtime thriller and really never looked back.

Offensively, the duo of junior’s Jasmine Shanks and Adryauna Baker have been too much for many teams to handle this year. Jasmine leads Okeechobee with 144 points, followed by Baker with 143. Sophomore Leta Adamo has proved to be a threat for the Lady Brahmans outside the perimeter, leading the team with 13 three-pointers.

Baker also leads the team in assists with 29 and steals with 53.

As a freshman Baker made a splash on the Lady Brahmans by nearly notching a quadruple double in a game against Port St. Lucie, which is when a player has a double-digit number total in four of the five categories in a game. The performance impressed Okeechobee coach Jovanny Torres who remarked he hadn’t seen an upperclassman with a stat line similar to Adryuana’s, much less a freshman.

With the first seed clinched the Lady Brahmans will first see playoff action on Feb. 3 in the district semifinals. Okeechobee and Jensen Beach both will have a bye as teams compete in the district quarterfinal.

The Lady Brahmans will face the winner of a match between Port St. Lucie and Boynton Beach, while Jensen will take on either Westwood or Suncoast.
Boynton Beach is 3-7 while Port St. Lucie is 5-9. Okeechobee played Port St. Lucie earlier this season and absolutely crushed them 48-6.

The district semifinal will tip-off at 5 p.m. on Feb. 3 at Jensen Beach High School. Coach Torres is asking for Okeechobee backers to make an effort to travel and support the team as they try to advance to the district championship.
