Lady Brahmans to host district championship

OKEECHOBEE– The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varsity volleyball team has advanced to the 5A District 15 championship.

The Lady Brahmans will host the district championship in Okeechobee on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m at Okeechobee High School. They’ll be facing the Jensen Beach Lady Falcons who are fresh off an appearance in the district championship last year.

This season Okeechobee finished with a 7-4 record. On Oct. 13 they defeated Port St. Lucie 3-0 in the semifinal for the chance to play in this week’s championship.

The Lady Brahmans faced Jensen Beach almost a month ago. The Lady Falcons won that match 3-0, taking the first set 25-16, second set 25-18, and third set 25-13.

Jensen Beach sophomore Lindsay Walch did the most damage in that game, scoring 12 kills followed by senior Naiya Sawtelle with 10. The nearest Lady Falcon to Walch and Sawtelle only managed four kills. The Lady Brahmans will have to find a way to limit that duo in the championship game.

It was the Lady Falcons last season who knocked off the Lady Brahmans in the district semifinals, something they’ve been able to do for two years in a row. In that game, despite each set being close, Okeechobee fell to Jensen Beach 3-0. Jensen won the first set 25-17, second set 25-23 and third set 25-13.

That second set is when the Lady Brahmans showed that they could go toe-to-toe with the Lady Falcons. Jensen was able to put together a small run toward the end of the set to go up 24-20, one point away from winning. But following a timeout by Okeechobee coach Taylor Padrick, the Lady Brahmans were able to put together a small rally of three unanswered points to make the score 24-23 and force the Jensen Beach coach to call a timeout of his own.

After the timeout Jensen Beach was able to regain their composure and stop the Okeechobee comeback to get the 25-23 win.

Still, that set was winnable for Okeechobee. And if they can string together a few more of those kind of performances they can return the favor in 2020 and give Jensen Beach a playoff loss.
