Letter to the Editor: There are still good people in the world

Posted

As it appears that our country’s politics and the world is getting a bit darker, with humanity seeming to eat itself. I recently experienced a bright light.

I have an old steer. He is huge with thick heavy horns, known as Ole Twister. His left horn had grown down and around and was starting to penetrate his jaw. Although he is old and not worth much, he will be here to the end. I didn’t want him to suffer.

After calling a large animal veterinarian, his assistant arrived and evaluated the situation and thought there would be no problem cutting the horn tip away from Ole Twister’s jaw.

Well, Ole Twister turned out to be one tough ton and hunk of beef. With six attempts and over four hours he was finally sedated enough to remove the horn tip. During this period of time the veterinarian was calm and caring.

I was prepared to pay whatever it took to take care of Ole Twister and braced myself as the vet prepared the bill.

Once presented the bill, I was shocked and glad to be leaning on my truck. The veterinarian considered the circumstances around Ole Twister and decided not to charge me for their time and only for materials.

Wow, a great chunk of my faith in humanity had been restored and that there are still good people in this world.

It is with great respect and appreciation that I whole heartedly thank Dr. Paul Bryant.

Sincerely,
Michael St. Hilaire, PhD
