Local woman needs help with cancer treatments

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — A former Okeechobee teacher is struggling to pay for treatment for stage four metastatic breast cancer and needs help from her community.

Heather Hall Hawk, daughter of Bruce and Gwen Hall, was born and raised in Okeechobee. She graduated from Okeechobee High School, went on to college and came home to teach in our local schools. In 2019, she served as guidance counselor for South Elementary School. Her children are fourth generation Okeechobee residents.

Hawk, 41, was forced to stop teaching after her diagnosis. She was very ill at the time and was also advised not to take any chances of exposure to COVID-19. The cancer has metastasized, and some of her tumors are on her spine. This makes standing for any length of time extremely difficult. The cancer is in several areas of her body including her liver and was not discovered until it was stage four.

Hawk is on life extending medications, and it was keeping the cancer at bay, but she had trouble with her insurance and the dosage had to be reduced. At that level the treatment is not as effective. The cost for the treatment she needs is close to $15,000 per month, and her insurance pays for only $6,000. This leaves the family trying to cover about $8,700 each  month. This cost is just for the medication.

With Hawk's permission, a family member set up a GoFundMe acoount to help pay for the medications needed to give Hawk more time with her three children.

If you would like to help but are not sure how to use GoFundMe or are not online, you can call Hawk's aunt Jennifer Koff Hall at 407-314-1317.
