Man charged with DUI after nearly hitting detective

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — A 70-year-old man was charged with DUI after reportedly almost hitting a detective with his vehicle.

On Saturday, Jan. 23 at approximately 9 p.m., several members of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office were located on State Road 70 East in response to a car fire. As they were working, they saw a vehicle fail to yield the right of way to the emergency vehicles attempting to respond to the fire, and once at the scene, the vehicle almost struck a detective. He had to take evasive action to get out of the way of the oncoming vehicle.

Deputy Shane Bogner was able to stop the vehicle approximately 1/2 mile down the road and the driver was identified as Darrell Brewer from Fort Pierce.

The arrest report notes Brewer appeared confused and smelled of alcohol.  Brewer reportedly told deputies he had been arrested and charged with DUI twice in the past.

Brewer was charged with DUI and transported to the Okeechobee County Jail. His bond was set at $1,000.
