OKEECHOBEE — At their Oct. 8 meeting, the Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners honored Greg Maynard for his service to veterans.

“This man puts forth a lot of effort in this community to help veterans,” said Commission Chairman Terry Burroughs. He said the veterans have served our country, “but in a lot of ways our country hasn’t served them very well when they have come home.”

Maynard is an Army veteran, born and raised in Okeechobee County, who has a reputation for giving back to his community and even more to his fellow veterans, said Burroughs. Maynard dedicates his time to assisting veterans in helping them find the right agencies so they can receive their rightful benefits and medical care. He helps to see that they are taken care of when they are in need, and he ensures they are not forgotten when they are gone.

Maynard has unselfishly dedicated countless hours to various individual veterans projects and community events, including but not limited to building ramps for veterans to utilize to gain entry in and out of their homes, removing a tree from a home after a hurricane, being part of revitalizing the army tank in City Park, and providing food to the elderly in Lorida after a hurricane, Burroughs continued.

Maynard said he accepted the proclamation on behalf of the other veterans and the community and community members who support the projects to help veterans. “Even during this COVID mess, the citizens of Okeechobee have always come through,” he said.

He said his current project is to refurbish some of the military artillery pieces in the Veterans Memorial portion of Flagler Park. He took the opportunity at the meeting to ask for community support. “I need some support with that, some welders and other stuff,” he added.
