Detention deputy saves inmate's life

Posted

OKEECHOBEE -- Meet Detention Deputy Sheriff Michael Leininger.

On May 23, 2021, while working A-Pod, a suicidal inmate, without warning, tied a sheet around the second tier rail, then their neck, attempting to jump to "hang" themselves. Distracting the inmate with a single shot of OC spray allowed Deputy Leininger to close the distance and put him closer as the inmate jumped over the rail.

Deputy Leininger summoned help and immediately cut the sheet while two other inmates grabbed the suicidal inmate and held him down. Deputy Leininger's actions undoubtedly saved the inmate's life that day.

For his actions, we are proud to present the Life Saving Award.
